C'est la version romaine d'une œuvre grecque du 4ème siècle avant JC. Le casque de bronze et la draperie ont été refaits par le sculpteur Albacini, On trouve une copie d'e ce buste d'Athéna dans les musées du Vatican.
Cette tête de Minerve, a été trouvée en 1783 dans la villa Casali parmi les ruines, qui sont censés avoir appartenu aux Thermes de Olympiodore les yeux étaient à l'origine en pierre précieuses, ou en pâte vitrifiée;
Cette statue possèdait à l'origine un casque de bronze, car les fixations sont encore apparentes. Cette tête trouvé dans la Villa Casali est mise dans le catalogue Parlour détenue par Simon Townley, mais selon Jenkins elle aurait été trouvé dans la Villa Palombara près de Santa Maria Maggiore

Acheté par Jenkins pour £ 100 celui decide de faire restaurer la statue avec un nouveau casque de bronze apres l'avoir montré à Angelica Kaufman et son mari, qui séjournaient avec lui à Castelgandolfo. Jenkins a constaté plus tard qu'il était nécessaire de proceder à la restauration du buste en bronze, bien qu'il avait initialement prévu d'utiliser l'albâtre. La restauration a été effectuée par Albacini . La tête était à Livourne en Novembre 1783, puis en Avril 1784, elle arrive à Londres).

‘A head of Minerva, found 1783 in the Villa Casali amongst ruins, which are supposed to have belonged to the Baths of Olimpiodorus; the eyes anciently were formed of precious stones, or vitrified pastes; it originally had a helmet of bronze, the fastenings of which are still apparent. That the head was found in the Villa Casali is repeated in the Parlour Catalogue owned by Simon Townley, but according to Jenkins it was found in the Villa Palombara near S. Maria Maggiore
The same letter demonstrates that alternative dates for the discovery must be wrong. Moreover, the findspot is given as ‘on ye Esquiline hill in ruins yt are supposed to have been ye baths of Olympiodorus’, perhaps another of that transcript’s many errors.
Bought from Jenkins for £100 In his first letter on the object Jenkins reported that the ancient bronze helmet was missing and was to be restored. He had shown the head to Angelica Kaufman and her husband, who were staying with him at Castelgondolfo. Jenkins later found that it was also necessary to have the bust restored in bronze, although he had originally intended to use alabaster. The restoration was carried out by Albacini (additional note in the Towneley Hall copy of the parlour catalogue).
