En 1917 fut créé l’ USAAS (United States Army Air Service ) lors de l'entrée en guerre des États-Unis
En 1926 après des longues luttes entres les partisans de la création d'une arme indépendante, (US Navy ou US Army ) et ceux qui voulait que ‘aviation soit une branche de l’US Army, chargée de soutenir les troupes au sol.
Elle fut créée le 2 juillet 1926 par décision du Congrès
Le 20 juin 1941 elle de devient le USAAF qui se transforme en USAF en le 19 septembre 1947
