Un des grands atouts de l'armée américaine au cours de la 2° GM a été la très grande mobilité de ses unités d'artillerie
L'Artillerie a été presque totalement mécanisée partant des canons aux obusiers en passant par les Canons automouvants (SPG self propelled gun dans la nomenclature Anglo-Saxonne actuelle )
La pièce d’artillerie est remorquée par différents engins en commençant par la jeep et en terminant par le Mack NO 7 ½ tonne. Entre ces deux extrêmes on trouve les tracteurs à grande vitesse (HST High Speed tractor)
Au cours de la 2° GM 3 familles, de ses HST ont été conçues et construites
Le M4 HST de 18tonnnes le M5 HST de 13 tonnes et le plus puissant le M6 HST de 38 tonnes
Le M5 est un HST utilisé pour la traction en tout terrain des canons de 90 mm AA ,de 4,5 inch et des obusiers de 155 mm
Le M5 HTS a été conçu et construit par International Harvester basé à Bettendorf (Iowa)
Son prix était de 14000 $ 1944
Il y avait quatre variantes de ces véhicules


Le prototype qui a servi à la base fut le T 20
Le train de roulement et la suspension sont basés sur celles du char léger M3 Light
Achevé le T 20 fut testé à Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) le 30 avril 1942 et après avoir réussi ses tests, il a été transféré à Fort Bragg le 27 Juin 1942
Le premier modèle de production ( numéro de série 503) est sorti des chaine le 21 mai 1943, et la production a débuté pour 24 mois permettant la construction de 5290 M5 HST

M5A1 13 tonnes HTS cabine fermée mai 1945 589 produits jusqu’à la fin de la 2GM
M5A2 et A3HST Après la 2° GM adoption de volutes horizontale sur le système de la suspension
M5A4 c’est un M5A4 avec coffres de rangement supplémentaires ajoutés sur les côtés
Le M5 HST peut transporte une équipe de 9 hommes L'arrière du châssis est occupé par le chargement (munitions caisses )
Il a été mu par un moteur Continental R 6572 6 cylindres refroidi à l'eau de 235 CV
Il possède des freins électriques et sur le modèle M5A2 sur le toit on trouve une circulaire de 12,7 mm AA d’auto défense

M5 HST


One of the great assets of the US Army during WW2 was their highly mobile artillery units
Us Artillery was almost totally mechanized ranging from guns and howitzer motor carriages (SPG in today nomenclature) to artillery towed with wheeled prime movers which depending upon, the piece could be anything from the jeep to the Mack NO 7 ½ ton . Between these extremes were the High speed tractors ( HST)
During WW2 3 families of, this HST were designed for this purpose
The M4 18ton , the M5 13 tons and the biggest M6 38 ton tractor
The M5 was an high speed , full tracks prime mover utilized for pulling the 90 mm AA guns 4.5 inch gun and the 155 mm howitzers
The M5 family of HST was designed and built by International harvester in Bettendorf works (IOWA)
and they cost 14000 $1944 each
There were four variations of these vehicles


The prototype was the T 20
the tracks and the suspensions of this M5 HST were based on those of the M3 Light tank
The first T 20 was shipped to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in April 30th 1942 and after successfully completing test he was transferred to Fort Bragg in June 27th 1942
The first production model serial number 503 was issued in may 21th 1943 and production began for 24 months
At the end 5290 HST will be build
