En règle générale un moteur d'avion au début du XXe siècle était mis en router par des moyens humains . L'hélice était brasée par un homme jsuqu'à ce que le moteur veuille bien démarrer. Cela était harassant et même dangereux

En 1917 un Capitaine anglais travaillant pour l'Aircraft Manufacturing Corps ( Airco) avec l'aide d'un ingénieur civil mrr Jhonson mettent au point un système qui sera dapté en 1918 sous le nom de Hucks starter en hommage au capitaine Huck mort de la grippe en 1918 
Le système est simple
Un moteur entraîne une chaine qui elle même entraîne un villebrequin fixé à l'hélice
2 hommes peuvent démarrer un moteur d'avion en 30 secondes
Ce système fut utilisé par le RAF jusqu'au début de la 2e Guerre Mondiale
Ensuite seuls les Japonais et les Soviétiques utiliseront ce système
