Ce véhicule est issu d ‘un programme initialisé aux Usa dans les années 30 ; A savoir fournir à l armée une gamme de véhicules tous terrains gamme qui va voir la naissance de la fameuse Jeep. Dans les années 30 il y eut expérimentation de 2 véhicules de commandement de 2.5 tonnes et de ¼ de tonnes.
Le véhicule vainqueur du concours fut le ¼ tonnes et il reçut le surnom d ‘un personnage célèbre des cartoons Jeep Il y eut deux versions de cet engin : Une version terrestre qui reçut le non de Peep et la version amphibie qui fut dénommée Seep La Jeep fut tout d ‘abord conçue pour fournir aux militaires américains un véhicule polyvalent tout terrain et 4x4 En 1940 malgré l envoi du cahier des charges à toutes les entreprises soit environ 130 seules 2 répondirent Bantam Car Company Butler de Pennsylvanie et Willys Overlord de Toledo dans l Ohio. Par la suite Ford envoya aussi son prototype.
Après des essais ce fut le prototype de Bantam qui fut choisi mais la production fut répartie entre les 3 industriels. Les tests continuèrent et les modifications apportées sur le modèle Willys furent retenues pour le modèle final. La production atteindra 639 245 unités .Pour sa part Willys en construisit 277 896.
Durant le conflit divers modèles furent construits pour satisfaire les troupes sur le terrain. Parfois même les modifications furent apportées par les troupes elles même A noter le rail coupe fil soudé sur le pare choc de l engin. La suspension est sur ressort exclusivement. Une batterie 6 vols assure l alimentation éléctrique de l engin qui est conçu pour le transport de 4 personnes Ce véhicule fut le plus réussi de sa catégorie .Sa carrière ne s ‘arrêta pas à la fin de la Guerre L’armée française réussie l ‘exploit de le maintenir en activité jusqu’en 1985 date à laquelle il fut remplacé par la

Variantes de la Jeep
