le Merkava Mark I
C

The Merkava  ?????  is the MBT of the State of Israël since the 80th He was built in 4 versions. Since his creation israël  initiated a politic of research and development for a domestically-produced tank, and in February 1964. Then, the idea was to assemble the French AMX-30 tanks in Israel, with the chassis produced locally, and the turrets imported from France. In 1965 the studies of a new tank  the Sabra  were launch  At the same time he was interresed by the new British MBT the Chieftain but result of political pressure  the contract was cancelled and  a team manager by Brigader general Ïsrael Tal launch the studies of a national MBT taking in account the lessons of the Youm Kippour War (1973 ) in crew survivability and safety .In 1974 the first prototypes were fabricated. The Merkava Mark I

With a classical architectur the Merkava has a crew of 4 men but with a turret located nearer the rear than in most main battle tanks. This gives additional protection to the crew  . This design required by the conceptor is found in all Merkava version This MBT bring a good protection to the  crew and the can be quickly repaired . The choose of the rear position for the turrett bring in addition to the protection more space and allow storage and some me fo ohther vezhicles could be shelterd in the Merkava thank to the rear door .This concept was take back in the Italian Centauro
The armour is very well studied with modular armour (easy to change) and also Chobam and RHA Armourd (Rolled Homogenous Armour
) .Empty space are utilised for tanks fuels(diesel) or storage . They are very efficient if the MBT is hit by HEAT sheels

Merkava Mark 1 prototypes (one with M60 turret )

Frame
It is classical in his configuration Engine fighting and storage compartments except the disposition with the engine compartiment in rigth front near the driver then the fighting compartment and the rear the storage compartment . The engine  diesel Taleidan Continental AVDS-1790-6A 908 CV with an hydro mechanic semi-automatic Allison CD850-6BX transmission, give a power to weight ratio of 14 hp/ton with a semi automatic gear box . The driver's compartment is located on the left side of the vehicle's power pack, this being isolated from the crew compartment by an armour-plated wall. The driver can move to the rear by lowering the backrest of his seat

the fighting compartment is on the  ¾ rear   The rear frame is utilised for storage but he can also receive soldiers or medical team for support on battlefield . On the other versions panniers and flexible fuel tanks are mounted on each side of the hull over the tracks . This panniers coud be use for  supply troops on the fine front . This ieda was take back on LeclercAZUR
The Turret
The turret could be rotate on 360º ( hydraulic power or manually ) and after many adjustments, the 60 mm mortar needed installed first in the out door of the turret was finaly installed in the inside The turret bustle received an installation of chain netting to disperse and destroy RPG before impacting the primary armour increased survivability. The turret receive a main armement with the 105mm M64 L71A tank gun, firing APDS, HEAT, HESH, Phosphorous and APFSDS ammunition and as secondary armament 3 7.62mm MG used as coaxial machine gun but for the other for close combat as well as against low-flying aircraft.

Versions of the Merkava Mark I
We found a 2nd version of the Merkava Mark 1 with the Merkava siman 1 Bet (Merkava mk.1B ) who is a modernization of the Mk.1 tanks to the Mk.2 level. The upgrade includes mostly the turret with the chains with balls on the rear of the turret are added. At the same time, usually there's no additional armor on the turret, the 60mm mortar remained external, and other minor things

The Merkava Mark I at war
The Merkava was first used in combat in 1982 during LEBANON WAR where Israel deployed 180 units.
After tests in Sinai and the Negev Merkava Mk. 1  was deployed in 1982 in Lebanon wher he was the spearhead of most of the armoured columns. The fisrst figth take place on the coastal road, from Rosh Hanikra, , north to Sidon , Damur, and Beirut . when Merkava have to face at a PLO positions with  RPG and SAGGER The tanks suffered many hits, with little effect on their performance. Some partially penetrated the armour protection but could not harm the crew.On the other fronts face to the Syrian Army   on the  Beka'a figths token place on the 3rd day between the 7th armoured brigade of colonel Avigdor Kahalani an the Syrian 73rd Brigade near Kabelias  with the action of all types of modern AT weapons, Merkava Mk. 1 withstood the battle excellently; in spite of  hits from both HEAT and APFSDS and  AT missiles .. Some Merkava Mk. 1 damaged return to the field in record time
So only one Merkava mark 1 was set on fire by PLO near Khaldeh
