À la fin de la 2e Guerre mondiale et pendant la guerre de Corée, la plupart des véhicules comme les Canons automoteurs étaient en configuration hard top. Durant cette époque dite de l'âge atomique, il fut décidé que tout véhicule militaire doit avoir dans la mesure du possible une protection contre le souffle nucléaire.
Le travail commence en 1948. Pour l'artillerie le premier modèle équipé de l obusier de 105mm fut le M52 qui a était construit en se servant de Composants du char Walter Bulldog Light Tank M41 . Le barbotin arrière a été abaisse afin de mieux résister aux ondes de choc consécutives au tir car ce véhicule ne possède pas de bèche d ancrage à l arrière Le moteur et la transmission ont été déplacés vers l'avant de la coque.
L'arrière de la coque possède une grosse tourelle tournant en azimut sur 60° de part et d'autre du centre. Les mouvements en site et en azimut sont manuel
L'équipage et le pilote se trouvaient dans la tourelle munies de trappes sur le toit. Le pilote à l avant gauche de la tourelle
684 M 52 ont été construits. En service avec la Belgique, la Grèce, le Japon et la Jordanie.

M52 105mm SP Light Howitzer

At the end of WW 2 and during Korean War most of vehicle like the SPG would be open topped . In this epoca of "atomic age it was decided that all military vehicle should have protection against nuclear blast. Work began in 1948. For the artillery the first model was equipped with the 105mm howitzer. Components of the Walter Bulldog M41 Light Tank were used. The rear track idler was placed on the ground to better resist firing shock, since no recoil spade was used. The engine and transmission were moved to the front of the hull. The rear of the hull supported a large turret which could transverse 60 degrees either side of center. Elevation and traverse were manual.
The crew and driver were in the turret. The pilot was in the rear left of the turret. Hatches were provided in the roof.
684 M 52 were built. In service with Belgium, Greece, Japan and Jordania.
