Le M60A2 était une solutiontransitoire dans l'attente du e MBT-70. Le M60A2, surnommé le "Starship" en raison de sa technologie  presente une  nouvelle tourelle à profil bas avec mitrailleuse coupole du commandant sur ??le dessus, ce qui donne au commandant une bonne vue et champ de tir  La tourelle abrite  un canon de 152 mm comme arme principale arme similaire à celui du M 551 Sheridan  qui peut tirer des obus conventionnel  mais aussi le missile  Shillelagh ATGM'S.  Le montage du système  CBSS (closed breech scavenger system) ou système de nettoyage de la culasse fermée), utilise l'air comprimé pour nettoyer la culasse après chaque coup, a résolu le problème de l' encrassement du canon
Mais le  M60A2 fut une déception, mais les lecons serivrent pour la mise ai point des futurs engins blindés Le 60A2 a été retiré des unités actives en 1981 et les tourelles mis au rebut. La plupart des chassis  M60A2 ont été reconstruits comme M60A3 Patton, ou ils furent convertis en véhicules armored vehicle-launched bridge (AVLB) vehicles.

The M60A2 was a stop-gap solution until the projected replacement by the MBT-70. The M60A2, nicknamed the "Starship" due to its Space Age like technology, featured an entirely new low-profile turret with a commander's machine-gun cupola on top, giving the commander a good view and field of fire while under armor but spoiling the low profile. It featured a 152 mm main gun similar to that of the M551 Sheridan light tank, which fired conventional rounds as well as the Shillelagh ATGM's. The fitting of a CBSS (closed breech scavenger system), which used pressurized air to clear the breech after each shot, solved the problem of unburnt propellant from the main gun rounds fouling the barrel and pre-detonating subsequent rounds. The M60A2 proved a disappointment, though technical advancements would pave the way for future tanks; the MBT-70, which relied on much of this technology as it was used in the M60A2, never advanced beyond prototype stage though. The Shillelagh/M60A2 system was phased out from active units by 1981, and the turrets scrapped. Most of the M60A2 tanks were rebuilt as M60A3 Patton, or the hulls converted to armored vehicle-launched bridge (AVLB) vehicles.
