Il est le deuxième navire de ce nom le premier étant une pré dreadnought lancé en 1897

Il a été mis sur cale le 9 Février 1897 à San Francisco, en Californie, par l'Union Iron Works, lancé le 26 Novembre 1898 et admis au service le 4 Février 1901
Après sa première croisière à Magdalena Bay, au Mexique, du 17 Mars au 11 avril 1901, il retourné à San Francisco le 15 avril
Après avoir faire une croisière avec les USS Oregon (BB 3), USS Iowa (BB 4), le croiseur USS Philadelphia, et le Torpilleur USS Farragut, dans le Pacifique Nord-Ouest, il atteint Port Angeles,le 29 Juin 1901
En Octobre 1901, il appareille pour Honolulu, Hawaii Après croisière dans le Pacifique, il retourné à Acapulco le 26 Février 1902 et parvient à Puget Sound Navy Yard le 4 Juin 1902.


Le navire subi des réparations jusqu'à 11 août 1902. Le 12 Septembre 1902, il appareille pour San Francisco, via Panama devenir un fleuron de l'escadron du Pacifique. Il est impliqué dans les événements de Panama et l’accord signé le 21 Novembre 1902 est appelé paix du Wisconsin.
Après avoir croisé pendant 3 ans avec l'Asiatic Fleet il revient aux États-Unis à l'automne de 1906.
Il a été mis retiré du service actif du 15 Novembre 1906 au 1er avril 1908
Il est de retour à San Francisco au début du mois de Juillet, où il se joint à la flotte de l’Atlantique pour la croisière de la "Great White Fleet" à travers le monde au cours de l'année 1908

En 1909, pendant les réparations, il perd ses couleurs Blanches et orange pour du gris.
Au printemps 1910, il arrive à Portsmouth où il est mis en réserve L’USS Wisconsin rejoindre l'Académie navale de l'Escadron de pratique au printemps de 1915, avec les USS Missouri et Ohio.
Le 6 avril 1917 les États-Unis déclarent la guerre à l'Allemagne et le 23 Avril 1917,l’ USS Wisconsin avec d'autres navires sont réadmis au service actif et affecté à l'Escadron de patrouille côtière Battleship.
Du début de Mai à début août,l’USS Wisconsin fonctionne comme un navire école en effectuant des croisières sur des navires dans la baie de Chesapeake et sa région .
L’USS Wisconsin navigue avec la flotte dans les eaux cubaines au cours de l'hiver 1918 et, de l'été 1919, pour fournir une formation aux futurs aspirants.
Radié de l’ US Navy le15 Mai 1920, il est vendu pour la ferraille sur le 26 Janvier 1922 suite à la signature du Traité de Washington.

Le second USS Wisconsin (BB-64) est mis sur cale le 25 Janvier 1941 chez Philadelphia Navy Yard lancé le 7 Décembre 1943 et admis au service actif le 16 avril 1944
Après un entraînement l’USS Wisconsin appareille pour les Indes Orientale Britanniques le 7 Juillet 1944. Il revient en arsenal pour les dernières modifications et le 24 Septembre 1944, L’USS Wisconsin appareille pour la côte ouest, transite par le canal de Panama,et arrive à Hawaii le 9 Décembre 1944 ou il intègre la 3e flotte de l'amiral William F. Halsey .
Le puissant navire de guerre arrive juste à temps pour la reconquête des Philippines
la 3rd Fleet avec la Fast Carrier Task Force (TF38) entre les 14 et 16 Décembre, conquiert la maîtrise totale de l'air en coulant 27 navires japonais, 60 autres sont endommagées de plus 269 avions sont détruit 269 avions, et diverses installations au sol sont bombardés.
L’USS Wisconsin apporte son appui feu lors de l'occupation de l'île de Luzon ou ses batteries antiaérienne protéges les porte avions rapides de la TF 38 au cours de frappes aériennes contre Formose, Luzon, et les Nansei Shoto, pour neutraliser les forces japonaises e et ses canons lourds couvrent le déroulement des opérations du golfe de Lingayen.
Les frappes aériennes entraînent de lourdes pertes à l'ennemi avec 38 avions de combat détruits et la TF coule ou endommage gravement 41 navires ainsi que des docks, zones de stockage, des installations Formose, de même que Hong Kong, Canton, et de l'île de Hainan sont eux aussi bombardés
Par la suite il est affecté à la 5e flotte sous le commandement de l'amiral Spruance L’USS Wisconsin vogue vers le Nord avec la TF58 et le 16 Février 1945, la TF 58 qui s’est approchée des cotes japonaises lance sous couvert de mauvaises conditions météorologiques une attaque surprise durant laquelle .322 avions japonais sont abattus et 177 détruits au sol
Ensuite le TF 58 se dirige vers Iwo Jima, le 17 Février afin de fournir un appui direct pour les débarquements prévus le 19
Le 19Mars1945 l’USS Wisconsin est envoyé vers le avec mission de d’éliminer toute résistance japonaise ensuite il revient vers Okinawa.
Entre le 24 Mars et le 6 avril l’ IJN Yamato se prépare à attaquer la flotte d'invasion américaine d'Okinawa .Mais il est coulé peu après . Sur place malgré la protection anti aérienne fournies par les gros bâtiments la flotte américaine est durement touchée par les Kamikazes . Avec des pertes sur les porte-avions CV USS Hancock CV 11 USS Intrepid CV17 Bunker HILL CV USS Franklin and CV6 USS Entreprise
Le 4 juin 1945 l'un des hydravions du Wisconsin amerrît et récupère un pilote abattu du CV 38 USS Shangri La
Au cours des mois de la 2e Guerre Mondiale l’USS Wisconsin utilise son artillerie lourde contre des cibles japonaises
Le 16 Juillet 1945l’USS Wisconsin avec les cuirassés britanniques de la Eastern Fleet bombarde les aciéries et les raffineries de pétrole à Muroran, Hokkaido. Deux jours plus tard, il détruit les installations industrielles d’ Hitachi Miro, sur la côte de Honshu, au nord de Tokyo, lui-même .
Le 24 et 25 Juillet Les avions Américains détruisent des objectifs sur Honshu, Kyushu et Shikoku. Kure marquant ainsi la fin virtuelle de la puissance maritime japonais.
La dernière action a lieu le 13 août. 1945 Deux jours plus tard, le Japon capitule. Le 2e Guerre Mondiale est finie
L’USS Wisconsin, arrive en baie de Tokyo le 6 Septembre, trois jours après la signature officielle de la capitulation qui a eu lieu à bord du cuirassé USS Missouri (BB63)
Il participe à l'opération Magic Carpet et revient à San Francisco le 15 Octobre 1945
Il transite par le canal de Panama entre le 11 et le 13 Janvier et atteint Hampton Roads le 18 Janvier 1945
Au cours de 1946, il croise au large des côtes de l'Amérique du Sud. L’USS Wisconsin passe la quasi-totalité de 1947, en Atlantique Nord et les eaux du nord de l'Europe et en Janvier 1948,l’ USS Wisconsin rejoint l'Atlantique Atlantic Reserve Fleet à Norfolk, pour être désarmé.
Placés en réserve le 1 Juillet 1948 l’USS Wisconsin a été affecté au Norfolk group of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Le 3 Mars 1951, après l'invasion de la Corée du sud par la Corée du Nord l’USS Wisconsin, est réarmé et il quitte Norfolk le 21 Octobre 1951 pour arriver à Yokosuka où il remplace l’USS New Jersey (BB-62) en tant que navire amiral de la 7e flotte.
Le 2 Décembre 1951 il a appui les troupes de la ROK à Kaesong-Kosong domaine. Ensuite l’USS Wisconsin fournit des appui à la demande jusqu’au mois de mars 1952 en tant que navire amiral de la 7e flotte, le 1er avril 1952 il est remplacé par l’USS Iowa (BB62) Il est de retour à Norfolk .
Au début de Juin 1952,l’USS Wisconsin, reprend son rôle de navire de formation, en emmenant des aspirants à Greenock, en Ecosse, Brest, France, et à Guantanamo Bay, à Cuba, avant de retourner à Norfolk ,Ensuite il participe à des exercices de l'OTAN
en 1953 en mer des Caraïbes et de l'Atlantique Sud
Il retraverse le canal de Panama pour le Japon,pour relever l’USS New Jersey (BB62) comme navire amiral de la 7e Flotte Le 12 Mai 1954, il retourne aux Etats-Unis
En Janvier 1955, il participe à des exercices avec la Atlantic Fleet en tant que navire amiral de al 2nd Fleet

Le 6 Mai 1955, il aborde le destroyer USS Eaton (DDE-510) dans un épais brouillard, endommageant sa proue . Celle-ci est remplacer par celle du USS Kentucky inachevé . Elle est transportée par barge, de New Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Corp., Newport News, vers Hampton Roads he Norfolk Naval Shipyard.. Le 28 Juin 1956, le navire était prêt pour reprendre la mer et aller à Barcelone. En Novembre 1956. Il entre à Norfolk Naval Shipyard pour des réparations majeures le 2 Janvier 1957.
En 1957 il sert de navire école dans l'océan Atlantique et la Méditerranée, mais les jours du Wisconsin sont comptés et il s’apprête pour sa dernière croisière.

Désarmé a Bayonne le 8 Mars 1958 l’ USS Wisconsin rejoint la "Mothball Fleet" jusqu'àu 22 Octobre 1988 ou pour la 3ème fois à la décision du président Reagan d’avoir l 'effort de créer une 600 ships Navy il est réarmé le 1er août 1986
L’USS Wisconsin participe à la 1ère guerre du Golfe, en tirant avec ses canons de 406mm sur des objectifs juste au nord de Khalji, en Arabie saoudite, l’ile Faylakah et la ville de Koweït en appui de l'offensive terrestre.

The first Wisconsin (BB 9) was laid down on February 9th 1897 at San Francisco, Calif., by the Union Iron Works launched on November 26th 1898 and commissioned on February 4th 1901
After his maiden cruise on t Magdalena Bay, Mexico, from 17 March to 11 April 1901 he returned to San Francisco on 15 April
After he make a cruise with USS Oregon (BB 3) and USS Iowa (BB 4), the cruiser USS Philadelphia, and the torpedo-boat destroyer USS Farragut, to the Pacific Northwest, reaching Port Angeles, Wash., on June 29th

The battleship underwent repairs until August 11th 1902. On September 12th 1902 he sailed for San Francisco, en route to Panama an become flagship of the Pacific Squadron, . He was involved in the events of Panama and an agreement was firm on November 21st 1902 called Peace of Wisconsin.
After during 3 years with the Asiatic Fleet before his return to USA in autumn of 1906.
He was decommissioned on November 15th 1906 and recommissioned on April 1st 1908

He return to San Francisco in early July where he join the battleships of the Atlantic Fleet for the cruise of the "Great White Fleet" around the world during the 1908 year
in 1909 during repairs he lost his bright "white and spar color" for a businesslike gray.
In spring 1910,he moved to the Portsmouth where he was placed in reserve USS Wisconsin join the Naval Academy Practice Squadron in the spring of 1915, assuming training duties along with USS Missouri and Ohio.
On April 6th 1917 USA declared war on Germany and On Apri 23rd 1917, USS Wisconsin with others battle ships were placed in full commission and assigned to the Coast Battleship Patrol Squadron.
From early May through early August, USS Wisconsin operated as an engineering school ship on training cruises in the Chesapeake Bay-York River area.
Between repairs training USS Wisconsin staid during WW1 in the After WW1 USS .
Wisconsin cruised with the fleet in Cuban waters that winter and, in the summer of 1919, made a midshipman training cruise to the Caribbean.
Placed out of commission on May 15th 1920 She was sold for scrap on January 26th 1922 as a result of the Washington Treaty .

The second USS Wisconsin (BB-64) was laid down on January 25th 1941 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard launched on December 7th 1943 and commissioned on April 16th 1944
After her trials and initial training USS Wisconsin departed for the British West Indies July 7th 1944,. Following her shakedown, he return on builder's yard for post shakedown repairs and alterations.
On September 24th 1944,USS Wisconsin sailed for the west coast, transited the Panama Canal, to Hawaii reach December 9th 1944
He joined Admiral William F. Halsey's 3d Fleet.
The powerful new warship had arrived just at a time for the reconquest of the Philippines
the 3rd Fleet's Fast Carrier Task Force (TF38 between 14 and 16 December, won complete mastery of the air and sank or destroyed 27 Japanese vessels; damaged 60 more; destroyed 269 planes; and bombed miscellaneous ground installations.
USS Wisconsin support the occupation of Luzon and with her heavy antiaircraft batteries performed escort duty for TF 38's fast carriers during air strikes against Formosa, Luzon, and the Nansei Shoto, to neutralize Japanese forces there and to cover the unfolding Lingayen Gulf operations.
Air strikes resulted in severe losses for the enemy. TF 38's warplanes sank 41 ships and damaged heavily damaged docks, storage areas, and aircraft facilities. Formosa, was also bombing like Hong Kong, Canton, and Hainan Island .

In March 3rd 1951 after the North Korean invasion of South Korea USS Wisconsin was recommissioned, After shakedown training,USS Wisconsin departed Norfolk on October 21st 1951 to Yokosuka where he relieved USS New Jersey (BB-62) as flagship for 7th Fleet .
On December 2nd 1951 he provided gunfire support for the ROK Corps in the Kasong-Kosong area. After USS Wisconsin providing gunfire where he was necessary during since march 1952 when he was as flagship of the 7th Fleet on April 1st 1952 by USS Iowa (BB62) He return at Norfolk.
Early in June 1952, Wisconsin resumed her role as a training ship, taking midshipmen to Greenock, Scotland; Brest, France; and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before returning to Norfolk and after he participated at the NATO exercises
